The Hungarian wine has a long history dating back to the era of the Roman Empire. The Romans brought the first vines in Pannonia in the 5th century AD, paving the way to Hungary to become one of the 3 largest wine-producing countries in the world at the beginning of the previous century.
After the change of regime in 1989, many areas were privatised resulting in major investments that have led to a further launch of quality Hungarian wines, while modernization of wineries took place. Today there are 22 recognized wine regions in Hungary. The most known is the region of Tokaj, at the border with Slovakia. The famous, eponymous sweet wine is produced there; so famous that it is even mentioned in the national anthem!
Apart from the white wine Tokaji, the red wine Bull’s Blood of Eger (Egri Bikavér) also has global recognition. Legends often accompany the history of these great wines and the most known Tokaji is the “Vinum Regum, Rex Vinorum” (Wine of Kings, King of wines) that exclaimed Louis 15th when he first tasted the wine.
Equally sought-after, Palinka is the “national spirit” of the country, the product of a protected geographical indication (PGI) and produced using distillation of fresh fruit like grapes, prunes, apples, pears, apricots, cherries, blackberries, etc.
Food Expo Greece 2017
ALX Greece and the Hungarian Export Promotion Agency (HEPA) publicly presented 37 companies from the Hungarian food and drink sector for the first time in Greece.
