Information technology in agriculture and food production in Hungary
The use of information and communication technologies in recent years has become especially important for agriculture and food production in Hungary. The development of modern procedures that comply with the most recent trends, plays an important role in improving productivity and increasing efficiency. The exceptional quality of research, development and innovation in the country provide the most competitive technologies at all times. Main areas of use that include ICT are: crop production, livestock, wildlife management, food safety, food processing and monitoring of environmental impacts. Effective support can be given to farmers for injury assessment, monitoring ecosystems, greenhouse pests, monitoring the use of key marketable food or the development of GPS systems to manage the accuracy.
Agricultural business management systems
Management systems for rural businesses pinpoint the specific needs of agricultural enterprises, collecting information about management in a transparent manner and monitor professional systems through interfaces, compound facilities, gas or milking stations. M2M solutions allow conventional corporate management system applications to directly access data obtained from machines and instruments and thus the introduction of new business models is born. With their use, business processes can be more transparent, the quality of the service can improve, cost-efficiency would be higher and investment payback period sould become shorter.
Robotic systems, which usually function via web-interfaces, connect with a mobile phone application reference. The effectiveness of the use of work organization and record-keeping saves time and fuel. Areas covered can be controlled and monitored through a central system and it is also possible to create a complex structure with sub-headings. Most control activities are automatically programmed and operated via remote access or a programmable control unit. Mobile applications developed are suitable to connect and process data collected from various analog and digital devices – such as temperature, humidity, rainfall, soil chemical composition, etc.
Processing management systems
Research for processing management systems is intended to develop mobile robots and technologies, which will provide the foundation for creating new products and services.
Imaging and image recognition
Using imaging and image recognition devices and systems can identify pests or provide experts and farmers with accurate and timely information in order to assist them with an effective pest control.
Drones and sensors
Flying drones may be developed rather fast and they have the ability to provide high resolution and represent a cost-effective solution; like remote sensors instead of small, satellite research aircrafts used so far, or they can be used in a complementary manner.
Underground fresh water networks
One of the basic requirements for the quality of produced goods, is the rich water supply: Hungary has one of the largest underground fresh water network in Europe, while the density and the yield of rivers and streams ensure first place among the other countries of the continent – the combined length of all rivers reaches 52.355 kilometers. The excellent agro-ecological characteristics of the country, allow the creation of diverse production structure. Crops, vegetables, pasture and meadow management and animal husbandry, provide great possibilities, which were further strengthened by accession to the European Union in 2004.
Agricultural products & Food
Agricultural production throughout the country is made without genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which is reflected in a wide range of food. Tightly controlled credential systems are applied to all sectors of the industry of agriculture in Hungary. As determined by the Constitution of Hungary, it is forbidden to grow and to use genetically modified crops. This ensures the production of agricultural products and processed foods, completely free of genetically modified organisms. Hungary produces excellent quality foods in all categories. In recent years, the use of information and communication technologies has become very important for the agriculture and food production in Hungary. The development of modern procedures that comply with the most recent trends, plays an important role in improving productivity and increasing efficiency.
Agricultural products and foodstuffs of Hungary – due to its geographic position, climatic conditions and high quality of applied technologies in the country, rank among the best in the world. The agricultural area covers 5.300.000 hectares, almost two-thirds of the total territory of the country. This is one of the highest proportions compared worldwide, while at the same time Hungary is the leader regarding soil fertility. The fertile land of the country is among the best in the world, which is reflected in both the performance and the quality of the produced goods.

Wines and other spirits
The Hungarian wine has a long history dating back to the era of the Roman Empire. The Romans brought the first vines in Pannonia in the 5th century AD, paving the way to Hungary to become one of the 3 largest wine-producing countries in the world at the beginning of the previous century.
After the change of regime in 1989, many areas were privatised resulting in major investments that have led to a further launch of quality Hungarian wines, while modernization of wineries took place. Today there are 22 recognized wine regions in Hungary. The most known is the region of Tokaj, at the border with Slovakia. The famous, eponymous sweet wine is produced there; so famous that it is even mentioned in the national anthem!
Apart from the white wine Tokaji, the red wine Bull’s Blood of Eger (Egri Bikavér) also has global recognition. Legends often accompany the history of these great wines and the most known Tokaji is the “Vinum Regum, Rex Vinorum” (Wine of Kings, King of wines) that exclaimed Louis 15th when he first tasted the wine.
Equally sought-after, Palinka is the “national spirit” of the country, the product of a protected geographical indication (PGI) and produced using distillation of fresh fruit like grapes, prunes, apples, pears, apricots, cherries, blackberries, etc.
